Make Working From Home Work For You!

  • Beautify Your Bookcase

by Chris Hayes July 22, 2019

Bookcases aren't just about books and books aren't always about reading. Just as a good read might have a gorgeous cover, a shelf can showcase your favorite titles while embracing a look that suits your space.

It's up to you to put the right array of collectibles, curios, and curiosities alongside the spines. Lovely little accents can break up a bookshelf and make a statement with or without words. The options are endless, but we've got a few ideas:

➡ Go horizontal and keep a few books on their side, creating a little bit of elevation to place a smaller trinket on top of the stack. It'll break up the homogeny of an endless line of vertical spines.

➡ Sometimes, the bookcase is the star of the show. Choose new, innovative open-ended designs or try out an expressive, modern finish. Storage choices can be the epitome of highly-functional décor.

➡ Somewhere over the reading rainbow, there's a tried-and-true, beautiful way to arrange titles without pigeonholing them by genre. Follow ROYGBIV and create a gradient that we all know and love. You'll never forget where a book belongs, either.

➡ Shadowboxes can showcase plane tickets, movie stubs, and other small sentimental pieces from the greatest times in life. Fit them seamlessly between vertically-aligned books to show off some special moments.

➡ Don't overstuff with stuff. Sometimes, less is more, and a little bit of blank space can make everything else shine brighter.

➡ Show off a little bit. Put your favorite titles at eye level so that everybody can see what books make you smile. Who knows-- maybe you and a friend have mutual faves and didn't even know it.

➡ There might be tips but there's no rules. As with any home décor decisions, a bookshelf is a place to express yourself. Try something different. Refresh after a while. Inspire a new trend. And, as always, create a space you love to live in.
