• Learning-from-Home with the Brite Collection

by Chris Hayes April 09, 2020

Just as we were getting ready for spring break, everything changed. College students weren't coming home to visit family (or maybe letting loose on campus), middle and high school students didn't get that sweet reprieve from piles of homework, and for our youngest learners, "Zoom" was about to take on a different meaning than "zooming around during playtime." For many, they wouldn't be heading back to the classroom indefinitely and for others the allure of the upcoming break didn't look quite so fun.

The same crisis that brought a work-from-home lifestyle to parents was about to do the same to kids. Just like you, they need a space to do their best (school) work and their needs aren't far off from your own. We believe in our Brite collection as a strong set of furniture that can suit students at any age, and we have a few recommendations for creating a great at-home learning environment.

► ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

The learn-from-home lifestyle has hit our littlest learners the hardest. Elementary school is a colorful and imaginative time where the classroom is its most important. Hands-on education is at the forefront of development and moving online is a particularly difficult transition. Parents have had to take a very prominent role in education (I hope you're all brushed up on your times tables-- math was hard back then and it's only become harder) and students have had to find a new normal during their most formidable years.

Hubbub Recommends: 30"W Desk, 4-Shelf Bookcase, Wobbleman

Growing minds benefit from focused workspace and a narrow desktop keeps things concise. Little learners can reach the bottom shelves of the bookcase to put away their supplies in bins and boxes while less frequently used items can live on the higher shelves. The wobbleman doesn't just fight fidgeting with its curved base; the cushion is removable for even more simple storage space. Bonus: Add a second bookshelf on the opposite side, since kiddos often have more learning tools and toys to keep organized.

► MIDDLE & HIGH SCHOOL

By the time middle school rolls around, playtime isn't quite the same and paying attention to the whiteboard is more important than ever. As learning becomes more technical, it starts to require a new type of organization and compartmentalization that's drastically different from the early years. Workspace is at a premium and you'll need the cable management and charging tools to keep your technology charged up for online classes.

Hubbub Recommends: 48"W Desk, 48"W Organizer, Armless Swivel Task Chair

College creeps up quicker than you'd ever imagine and, if you play your cards right, your desk might follow you to a dorm room or teeny-tiny off-campus apartment. A low-profile yet spacious 48" desk and organizer has the workspace necessary to stay organized with plenty of room to keep everything in sight. Our armless task chair is mod and mobile for pivoting throughout your space. Bonus: Swap out the 48" desk for a height-adjustable model, which can dip a little lower for the early years and grow as they go.

► COLLEGE

"They" say that college is supposed to prepare you for the real world… "They're" not wrong. You're used to the dorms and when this all blows over, you'll be back. As you add an updated study space to your childhood bedroom, you'll need the amenities of school for now, as well as tools that will fit you in the future. A great college setup looks a lot like a grown-up work-from-home office and your furniture choices should reflect that.

Hubbub Recommends: 48"W Standing Desk, 30"W Organizer, Active Perch Fit Kit

A standing desk gives you the flexibility to walk right up or use a higher stool or perch. The active fit kit pairs a wobbling perch with a balance board, fulfilling both options while adding a core-strengthening bonus. We've paired a narrow 30" hutch with a wider desk, adding storage to your desktop without taking up the entire workspace Bonus: Go a step further with a file pedestal to keep last year's notes organized and out of the way.

Before COVID-19, we were all thinking about it-- do I really need to go in today? Can't I just knock this out from home? What if I'm more focused when I'm remote? Now that we know that the home office and the at-home office are both viable options, maybe it's time to add some work-from-home workdays to your schedule.

Say it with me-- sitting is the new smoking. Over the years, we've learned that staying still is a detriment to your health and is hard on your body. We've got a lot of work to do if we want to shift stagnant, working culture to a better place, but how?

We'll never forget the time that the workforce went home for a lot of reasons, but we'll always think fondly about the little bit of joy our coworkers could bring from these big changes. In the age of social distancing, boardrooms are barren and our only worktime face time is online… So why not make these tough times a good time?
